  1. Seeing The Day of the Jackal film again 10 years ago, I was pleased to see that it was still a gripping procedural, nearly 40 years since I saw it as a 13 year old – despite knowing the ending. Another procedural from that period that is just as good as when I read it in the early 70s is ‘The Springing of George Blake’ by Sean Bourke (I don’t think he’s related, but his surname is pronounced berk). Primitive walkie talkies, a rope ladder made using knitting needles, a couple of helpers from the CND years, and a narcissistic prisoner – it has all the makeshift derring do as the great train robbers. Bourke did his best to drink himself to death in the early 80s, instead recent reports say he may have been an early poisoning victim of the Russians, who also ransacked the caravan he was living in and stole the manuscript he was working on, about the year he spent in Moscow after enabling the escape. Blake was just one reason he skulked back to the Republic.

  2. Surely it’s Edward Fox, not James Fox in Day of the Jackal? Great film and book. Really awful American re-make with Richard Gere.
